On July 4th, 2010, Governor General of Canada Michaelle Jean and her attendants, totalling 50 people came to visit the Chengdu Panda Base.
Mrs. Michaelle Jean visited scenicspots such as the Giant Panda Discovery Center, Panda Sunshine Nursery House, Panda Kindergarten, and took pictures with pandas, in the company of Zhao Weiping, vice director of Department of American and Oceania Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, deputy director Lin Bin, the first secretary Fan Xiaodong, staff officers from the No. 8 bureau of the Ministry of Public Security Jin Liyuan and Han Yue, leaders of the Foreign Affairs Office of Sichuan, assistant director Wang Chengdong, director of Research Center Hou Rong, and vice director of the Conservation Education Department Sarah Bexell at the Panda Base. She expressed that the Chengdu Panda Base has a wonderful environment and delightful scenery, the biggest captive giant panda population in the world, globally advanced scientific research techniques for giant pandas, and an excellent research team. The Chengdu Panda Base is not only a business card for Chengdu, Sichuan, but also China. She also hoped that she would have a chance to see the pandas at the Panda Base again in the future.
This visit was the first important visit of a governor general of Canada to China in 15 years. It was a great event for the relationship between Canada and China in the 40th anniversary year of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries Chengdu Panda Base was an important stop in Sichuan, reflecting the governor general s concern and support for giant panda conservation works.
