LanzaTech, Chinese steel maker Baosteel and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have begun building a demonstration-scale plant in China. The project will use LanzaTech s gas fermentation technology to convert steel industry waste gases into ethanol. The facility will have the capacity to produce 100,000 gallons per year of the fuel, with plans to increase to commercial-scale in the future. The two firms have set up a joint company, called Shanghai Baosteel LanzaTech New Energy, to build and operate the plant. Construction is scheduled for completion in Q3 of this year.
Last month, LanzaTech partnered with South Korean steel maker POSCO to produce ethanol from steel industry off-gases. The pair will also produce 2,30-Butanediol, which is used to make polymers, plastics and hydrocarbon fuels.
