Chinese ZTE Corporation recently signed an agreement to joint U Mobile, Malaysia's leading telecom carrier, to deploy a high-speed wireless network across Malaysia.
This wireless network features a fourth-generation mobile communications standard, said ZTE's Asia-Pacific president Zheng Bang, and it offers bandwidth of up to 100 Mbps, which will be the fastest Malaysia national mobile broadband network.
The amount of capital involved in the contract is estimated by insiders at hundreds of millions of dollars, though the actual amount has not yet revealed.
This project is of significance to the newly-issued Malaysian Economic Transformation Program. It acts as an economic boost role by expanding the national broadband network coverage in attempt to help Malaysia achieve the rank of a developed country by 2020.
This is the 16th contract won by ZTE worldwide for the construction of high-speed wireless networks and the third time for the Chinese company to win a contract for telecom infrastructure construction in Malaysia after it tapped into the Malaysian market in 2004.
Attendees at the signing ceremony included Malaysian Information, Communications and Culture Minister Dato' Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Chai Xi.
