Wiki-style information site Hudong Encyclopedia (hudong.com) announced Tuesday the company is appealing to authorities to conduct an anti-monopoly investigation on Chinese search engine giant Baidu, alleging the latter manipulates searches and eliminates Hudong entries from its top search results.
The appeal was handed on to the State Administration of Industry and Commerce and is in form of petition for a fine to Baidu of 790 million yuan ($120 million) for violating the Anti-monopoly Law.
Most searches on baidu.com do not display Hudong entries as first-page results whereas with other search engines (such as Google and Bing), Hudong entries appear on the first page every time.
A spokesman for Baidu said that Baidu Baike is supported by users because it has high quality entries. Baidu believes everyone has an equal chance to develop on the Internet, which is free and open.
This is not the first dispute between the two companies. In early 2010, Hudong found that its entries were copied into Baidu Baike without attribution. Baidu claimed that they were not at fault, as all entries and content are generated by Web users.
