The largest aviation freight facility in midwest China was put into operation on Monday in Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, located in the southwest China province of Sichuan.
Constructed in Chengdu Aviation Logistics Park, the first-stage of the aviation freight station covers an area of 17.3 hectares and was built at a cost of 300 million yuan (about 45.6 million U.S. dollars).
The structure can handle a maximum of 70 tonnes of air cargo in the Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport each year.
By receiving and delivering cargo within the park, logistics companies will be able to cut costs and increase transportation efficiency.
The aviation cargo in Chengdu will increase sharply due to demands caused by mass-production in manufacturing plants at Intel, FOXCONN and other large electronic enterprises. It is estimated that more than 100 tonnes of electronic products will be delivered through air transport.
In 2010, the throughput of Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport reached 432,000 tonnes, which was the sixth largest in China.
