Lottery set for new Beijing car licenses

License plates needed to purchase and operate any new car in Beijing will be decided for the first time by a lottery on Jan 26.
The random selection will be broadcast live over the Internet and on TV, according to Li Xiaosong, deputy director of the Beijing transportation commission.
Local media cited Li saying that the numbers will be picked by computers and the whole process will be transparent, with the drawing designed by China's top statisticians to ensure the procedure is fair.
Registrants can check the results on the Internet or by telephone one hour after drawing. The Beijing government implemented the procedure at the start of the year to control car sales in a bid to ease increasing traffic congestion.
