Chang'an Motor established the first R&D center by a Chinese automaker in Detroit on Jan 18 to focus on chassis development, considered one of the most difficult aspects in automotive engineering.
According to Xu Liuping, president of Chang'an Motor, the R&D center will play a key role in the company's overseas expansion following its already operating R&D centers in Italy, Japan and Britain.
Its R&D centers in China include operations in Chongqing, Shanghai, Beijing and Heilongjiang and Jiangxi provinces.
Its Italian center focuses on styling, while that in Japan does interior design and the British facility produces engine and transmission engineering.
