Small scale tanneries in Fujian province overall to be shut down

A pollution control action on the leather making industry will be launched in Fujian province, the Fujian provincial environmental protection authority said on October 10. The deadline to close small scale tanneries in the cities of Fuzhou, Zhangzhou, Quanzhou and Putian has set on the circulated Pollution Control Liability Statement. Tanneries violated the emission laws will be recorded on the blacklist in financial institutions, and severely punishment will be employed to the violators like suspend loans.

According to the Statement the tanneries with annual production capacity less than 30,000 pieces of equivalent to cow leather have to be shut down right now, the capacity below 100,000 pieces will be eliminated by 2012; less than 300,000 pieces to be closed in 2015.

The statement further required all the tanneries should move to leather concentrated area and employ cleaner production, the treated effluent can’t be discharged directly into rivers, lakes and reservoirs but to the deep sea. The provincial government will start the inspection and supervision to the implementation of the statement at the beginning of 2011, and the inspection result will be circulated publicly that will be regarded as one of performance evaluation to local officials.
