Taiwan designers aim at mainland market

Taiwan used to be the world famous export area of cheap garments. Now, it is eager to explore mainland market so as to revibrate its garment industry.

Although some Taiwan designers are acknowledged by the world fashion industry, almost all of them learn and work abroad.

However, this phenomenon will probably be changed, too. The ECFA signed in June will help Taiwan designers to come to mainland market. What's more, their intellectual property rights will be better protected and the tariff will be reduced.

The head of Economy department, Mr. Huang Chung-Chui says that the decline of tariff is beneficial to the garment industry in Taiwan but the industry need focus more on the market creativity.

Taiwan used to be the leader of production of textile all over the world. However, it only ranked 6th now. The export value of textile in Taiwan in 2009 is 9.4 billion US dollars, decreasing by 40% compared to the prime time of 1997.

The decrease of tariff helps more Taiwan enterprises enter mainland China market. Creations of Taiwan designers will be more attractive to mainland China consumers than those designed by foreign designers because of the same Chinese culture they share. In addition, a lot of Taiwan designers are interested in mainland market.
