Price should not be the deciding factor when shopping for sunglasses, according to a German consumer interest group.

Cheap models can seriously damage the eyes, warns the German Green Cross, since they offer minimal UV protection. Furthermore, the tinted glass causes pupils to open wider, leaving the eyes even more vulnerable to UV rays. Prolonged use can also lead to symptoms like snow blindness or cataracts.

Consumers should instead focus on the quality of the glasses. The group recommends glasses that offer protection of at least UV-400, which filter out all dangerous wavelengths. A CE label guarantees the glasses offer such protection.
