Commerce ministry: No trade war between China, EU

There are certain beliefs that China and the European Union are currently in a trade war after China launched an anti-subsidy investigation on potato starch imports from the European Union and the European Union launched anti-dumping and anti-subsidy sanctions on coated paper imports from China.
In response to this, Yao Jian, spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce of China (MOFCOM), expressed on May 17 that the economic and trade relations between China and the EU are quite close, and it is not surprising that legal disputes in trade exist between the two parties. It is also likely that disputes will continue to emerge in the long term when it comes to certain products, but they only account for a very low percentage of between 1 percent and 3 percent.
Yao said that China believes the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy sanctions launched by the European Union on the coated paper imported from China were wrong. He said China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes it and has accused the European Union of ignoring its marketization process.
While the European Union was adopting the discriminatory and unfair "surrogate country" measure during the anti-dumping investigation, it also insisted on launching an anti-subsidy investigation on products from China. Regarding the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy case of the European Union's potato starch, Yao said the MOFCOM adjudicated it according to the application by the Potato Starch Specialty Council under the China Starch Industry Association.
The council can represent 98 percent of the whole output of the industry. During the adjudicating process, the MOFCOM carried out all the procedures according to laws of China and rules of the WTO. The entire case lasted two and a half months and related E.U. enterprises also provided related data and materials.
