Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has begun to fully implement the statutory minimum wage on May 1, and the first statutory minimum wage level begins at 28 yuan per hour.
The "Minimum Wage Ordinance" formulated that the wages of employees in any wage period shall not be less than the statutory minimum wage in accordance with the total working hours during the wage period.
The statutory minimum wage applies to all kinds of employees. Employees including monthly, daily, permanent, temporary, full-time and part-time employees are under the protection of the "Minimum Wage Ordinance." However, the statutory minimum wage does not apply to live-in domestic helpers and internship students.
Queenie Tang, senior labor officer under the Labor Department of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said that the purpose of implementing the statutory minimum wage is to set the minimum wage levels to protect basic employees, and the principle of promoting the statutory minimum wage is to avoid excessively low wages, reduce the loss of low-paying jobs, and to maintain Hong Kong's economic development and competitiveness to strike a proper balance.
