Life expectancy reaches 78 years in Shenzhen

Average life expectancy in Shenzhen was 78 years in 2010, 1.26 years older than life expectancy in 2005, the city health department said Wednesday.

About 71,000 babies born in Shenzhen survived last year, an increase of 27.65 percent over 2009. The infant mortality rate was only 2.35 percent last year, according to a report released by the city health commission Wednesday.

The mortality rate for children aged under 5 was 3.5 per 1,000, whereas the mortality rate for non-Shenzhen hukou children aged under 5 was 4.26 in 1,000, slight decreases from the previous year.

Shenzhen s population was estimated at 13.46 million people last year, 712,200 more than in 2009. Of these, 2.83 million were hukou holders, while the rest were non-hukou holders living in Shenzhen for more than six months. The number of non-hukou holders residing in Shenzhen increased by 622,100 in 2010 over the previous year.

More than 10.38 million residents had medical insurance, an increase of 1.27 million on 2009, the report said.
