Police in Shenzhen are offering rewards to encourage people to report violations in transport, public security and fire safety to ensure safety during the Universiade.

Informants who report breaches of fire safety regulations at Universiade sports venues, hotels, supermarkets and other public places will be paid a reward of 1,000 yuan (US$153).

Residents who report shoddy manufacturing, unsafe transport and the sale or storing of dangerous or explosive products or poisonous chemicals are entitled to a reward of 500 yuan for every suspect detained. They are also entitled to a 500-yuan reward for reporting people carrying explosives or toxic materials on public transport or mailing the material in packages.

There was also a reward of 500 yuan for evidence of illegal manufacture, transport and sale of fireworks, replica firearms and controlled knives, police said.

A 500-yuan reward would be paid for reports of vehicle overloading and people illegally operating motorcycle taxis.

The system to encourage people to report offenses to police will be in place until the end of August. Numbers to call are 0755-2222-2110, fax to 8446-5145, text message number 0755-110. Online reports can be made to www.szga.gov.cn.

The city adopted the system in July 2009 and received 7,000 lines of information that led to the exposure of 3,400 crimes and the arrest of more than 5,100 suspects on criminal charges.

More than 7,600 people received rewards ranging from 200 yuan to 20,000 yuan.
