Dongguan Government will continue to contribute large amounts of funding to address the water pollution in ShiMa River.

A budget of RMB 2 billion from Dongguan Government is set to be allocated for water pollution control in the river this year, Dongguan's Mayor Mr. Li Yuquan said Sunday during this year's Provincial People's Congress in Guangzhou.

ShiMa River originates from a mountain in Baoan District of Shenzhen. It runs northward through Tangxia, a township which boarders Shenzhen, passing Qingxi, Zhangmutou and Changpingto and eventually joins the Dongjanng River, the primary drinking water source for Dongguan's 7-million strong population.

Thousands of factories along the river have been polluting the water over the past years, making the water black and dirty.

Li said his government has devised a program for addressing the pollution, and that he hoped Shenzhen and Huizhou would release their plans for the pollution problem.

"Shenzhen and Huizhou have not paid enough attention to addressing this problem. The progress that Dongguan has made toward reducing the pollution in the Shima River has been lessened by this fact," Li said.

"The control of water pollution in ShiMa River can not succeed if the three cities do not work together."
