2010-09-20

On September 15, SMU conducted special study on Manila Amendment to STCW Convention. All teachers of SMU Merchant Marine College attended the special study.

The revised STCW Convention was adopted in Diplomatic Conference held in Manila, Philippines, in June 2010, and it will take effect on 1 January 2012. Prof. Ruan Wei, Dean of SMU Continuing Education College and Director of Seafarers Training Center, outlined the Manila amendment to STCW Convention and its impact on maritime education.

SMU Vice President Cai Cunqiang pointed out that with the rapid development of navigation technology the shipping industry was demanding for ever higher talented persons. China is the A-class member of the IMO and SMU is one of China s most important high level maritime universities Both of them should play an important role in full and complete implementation of STCW Convention. Professional teachers in higher maritime education should continue to learn new theories and methods to conduct nautical practice so as to cultivate high-quality shipping talents.
