The Delegation Led by Vice Minister Chen Xiao-ya of Science and Technology Visited SJTU

On the afternoon of February 25, Vice Minister Chen Xiao-ya of Science and Technology led a delegation to visit SJTU. During the investigation, she was accompanied by Liao Xiao-han, Deputy Director-General of Department of Basic Research of MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology), Lu Xiao-chun, Vice Director of Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, SJTU President Zhang Jie, Vice President Lin Zhongqin and Peng Ying-hong, assistant to President.

In the company of Zhang Jie, Lin Zhongqin and others, Chen Xiaoya visited the Key Laboratory of Microbial Metabolism and the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical System and Vibration. In the lab, Chen Xiao-ya listened to the introduction given by the staff and asked about the relevant operating principle.

Seeing the postgraduates doing experiments carefully, Chen Xiaoya showed her concern over their research and life. She said that recent years had witnessed the rapid development of SJTU with the experimental device gradually improved, the scientific research level greatly elevated and the triumphant news on scientific achievements pouring in.

And all of this was credited to the implementation of the strategy of revitalizing China through science and education and adherence of SJTU to the "problem-oriented" scientific research.

After the visit, Chen Xiaoya had a meeting with some SJTU researchers. At the forum, President Zhang Jie gave a speech on "The Idea and Thinking of Constructing First-class University". He said that the essence of the university was innovation, the soul was academic pursuit and the mission was to cultivate talents.

And the mission of SJTU was to cultivate talents of innovative leadership. Zhang Jie briefed them on the measures taken to develop SJTU into a first-class university and the achievements made in recent years. To build the first-class university, SJTU formulated the development plan of "SJTU 2020" to remould the university soul of academic pursuit, strengthen the introducing and training of high-level faculty and implement the idea of "trinity" in education.

Based on "problem-oriented" research that SJTU initiates, the layout and construction of discipline development is to be cemented, the inter-college international appraisal to be conducted, first-class university culture to be built and the overall reform concerned with the fundamentals of future development to be executed.

SJTU has been steadily carrying out all the reforms and would keep on moving firmly.

Gao Feng, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical System and Vibration, reported on the overview, main research and management of the lab operation. Reports on discipline construction were also given by Mao Jun-fa, vice director of the School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering and chief scientist of the 973 Program, Director Zhao Wan-sheng of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Professor Zhang Yong-ming of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

After the reports, in the speech delivered by Chen Xiao-ya, she said that SJTU had been taking powerful steps towards the goal of constructing a first-class university under the guidance of first-class idea of education. Chen Xiao-ya hoped that SJTU would make new contributions to promote the development of technology and innovation. She said that MOST would further the reforms of the science & technology system, continue to support basic and original scientific research and provide system guarantee for scientific research work.
