To be competitive in the growing clean energy economy, US plans to assign more funds in the field of fuel cell research.
Funding for fuel cell research in the United States will help the country stay ahead of the curve in greening up its economy, the Department of Energy said.
The U.S. Department of Energy said it was accepting applications to tap into $74 million to support research in fuel cell technology.
Energy Secretary Steven Chu said the funding would help the U.S. economy develop its fuel cell market while at the same time reducing foreign dependency on oil and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
"The investments we're making today will help advance fuel cell technology in the United States," he said in a statement. "This is part of a broad effort to create American jobs, reduce carbon pollution and help ensure the U.S. stays competitive in the growing clean energy economy."
The department said the ultimate aim of an advanced fuel cell market was to create a clean, reliable source of energy and support U.S. energy security.
Fuel cells use hydrogen to produce energy while giving off mostly water as a byproduct .
