The heads of Italian Eni and Russian Gazprom have extended the strategic agreement between the companies until 2012, Eni said Thursday.
Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller and Eni CEO Paolo Scaroni signed an extension of the November 2006 deal in Moscow Thursday. The previous deal would have expired at the end of this year.
There will in future be automatic, yearly renewals unless one of the two parties decides otherwise.
The agreement covers industrial and commercial initiatives in the Russian Federation and in other countries, including in mid- and downstream gas and in the upstream sector.
The companies have also signed agreements to cooperate in technical and scientific developments.
"These agreements envisage the creation of integrated working groups to study the application of drilling, production, transportation, energy saving and LNG technologies and processes, as well as personnel training and development," Eni said.
One key area of cooperation highlighted by Eni is the South Stream project to carry gas from Russia to the European Union across the Black Sea.
