Americas: Algonquin starts open season on planned Northeast expansion project

Write: Bethesda [2011-05-20]
Spectra Energy on Monday launched a non-binding open season to expand the Algonquin Gas Transmission line to deliver additional Appalachian and Marcellus Shale gas supply to the Northeast and New England.

Seeking to tap further into Marcellus production, the Algonquin Incremental Market project will allow shippers to access new and existing receipt and delivery points, Spectra said. It also would increase the capacity of the Brookfield, Connecticut, interconnection with Iroquois Gas Transmission via a compression-only service offered by Algonquin.

"We are seeing significant shifts in the natural gas supply dynamics for the US Northeast and New England markets," Bill Yardley, group vice president of Spectra Energy Transmission, Northeast, said in a statement. "While traditional imports from Canada are declining, we're seeing a dramatic increase in available supply from the Appalachian region, including the Marcellus Shale play. Connecting this new supply to these important and growing markets will be highly beneficial to our customers, offering them increased supply diversity and reliability and an enhanced ability to manage price volatility."

Additional information on the open season may be obtained from Greg Crisp at 713-627-4611. The open season ends February 11.
