Europe: Statoil moves to boost recovery rates at N Sea Kvitebjorn field

Statoil said on Friday it was moving to boost production at its Kvitebjorn gas condensate field in the northern part of the North Sea with a new compressor module.

Statoil said it had awarded engineers Bergen Group Rosenberg a contract to build and install a compressor module on the Kvitebjorn platform.

"This will contribute to improve the recovery rate and accelerating production at Kvitebjorn by allowing for production with reduced wellhead pressure," said Jannicke Nilsson, Statoil senior vice president for operations North Sea in Exploration & Production Norway.

Statoil said the Kvitebjorn pre-compression project would increase production of gas and condensate from the field by about 35 million standard cubic meters of oil equivalent and the recovery rate to 70% from 55%.

Without this pressure increase, production from the field would have to be closed down at a much higher wellhead pressure and production would decrease from 2013 with today's known resources, Statoil said.

A Statoil spokeswoman said the company could not give out current production levels at Kvitebjorn.

But the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate has estimated that production of gas in 2010 is 6.58 billion cubic meters with oil output at 49,000 b/d. Kvitebjorn, located in production license 193, is also expected to produce 310,000 mt of NGL in 2010.

The offshore installation will take place from 2012 until completion in early 2014.

Statoil, the operator, has a 58.55% stake in Kvitebjorn. Other partners are Norwegian state owned group Petoro on 30%, Enterprise on 6.45% and France's Total with the balance.
