Anglo American has decided to seek buyers for its Callide thermal coal mine in Central Queensland, Australia, in order to focus on developing metallurgical and high margin export thermal businesses, the company said in a statement Monday.
The Callide mine mainly supplies domestic power stations in Queensland and is wholly owned by Anglo American. The mine produced 8.8 million mt of thermal coal in 2009 and has the potential to expand, given its resource base of more than 1 billion mt, Anglo said.
London-headquartered Anglo American is one of the world's largest mining companies, and is listed on the London and Johannesburg stock exchanges. It is involved in precious and base metals, minerals and bulk commodities.
