China: PetroChina Dushanzi Petchem unlikely to debut Group II outputs within 2010

PetroChina Dushanzi Petrochemical defers Group II base oil outputs, as upgrading project of its base oil production facility which started from the second half of 2009 was uncompleted by now, revealed a company source. Upgrading would be completed next year, he added, saying that specific timetable remained unknown.

The refinery previously scheduled to resume base oil production during the second half of this year, introduced the source. With a designed base oil production capacity of 200,000mt/yr, the facility would mainly yield low-viscosity Group II resources after upgrading, according to him.

The spot market would not expect large volumes of Group II resources from PetroChina even with yields at the hydrocracker in the future, as the oil giant would reserve most outputs for self-consumption, said an industry source.

The oil major, with only one refinery Daqing Refining & Chemical Co producing Group II resources, was also in want of Group II cargoes, he explained. It had been importing Group II base oils for use due to insufficient supply of self-produced resources, he furthered.

Located in Xinjiang of Northwest China, Dushanzi Petrochemical has a base oil production capacity of 300,000mt/yr. It mainly produces machinery oils (base oils as feedstock of industrial-use lubricants) before the upgrading project.
