Middle East:Crude oil best performer in week upto Oct 1

In a recent study by the NCDEX Institute of Commodities Market and Research (NICR) revealed that in the past one week, Crude oil turned out to be the best performer for the week ending, 1st October.

The price of crude gained on continued dollar weakness, positive economic data and the expectation of improved demand from emerging economies. Coriander scored 3% gains by the end of the week.

Turmeric pegged more than 2.5% in the long positions. While, spices made a killing in past one week, bullions fell short of the other metals as well as agro commodities.

The weekly returns of select commodities, a set of agricultural, metals and energy products based on their spot prices are calculated to look at the performance of commodities as an investment alternative.

There are a number of factors that affect the returns of the commodities which not only emanate from the domestic front but also reflect the global demand-supply equations, the NICR report noted.

Coriander exports in the April-August period reached 23,000 tonnes this year against 21,500 tonnes in the corresponding period last year. India s total spices exports increased during April-August period by 13% as compared to last year in volume terms, with Chilli scoring the highest volume among the spices basket.

According to the Spices Board of India, chilli exports in the first five months of the current fiscal stood at 1,02,750 tonnes, up 35% over the same period last fiscal. Value-wise also, it scored the top position with exports worth Rs. 631.74 crores.

Area covered by Sugarcane in the current season at 50.60 lakh hectares has shown a rise of 8.58 lakh hectares by the end of September compared to last season. The Central Government has decided to make available 19.98 lakh tonne of sugar (levy sugar 2.48 lakh tonne and non-levy sugar 17.50 lakh tonne) for the month of October, 2010.

The validity period for sale and dispatch of the non-levy sugar quota released for the month of September, 2010 in respect of both indigenous sugar and sugar processed out of imported raw sugar has been extended by 15 days i.e. up to 15th October 2010.

Moreover, the government has decided to revert back levy sugar obligation to 10% and not extended the sugar futures ban which was effective till 30th September 2010.

Kharif crops have been sown in 1017.63 lakh hectares area so far, up 64.97 lakh hectares from the acreage on this date last year (952.66 lakh hectares). It is also 10.02 lakh hectares more than 2008, which was a record production year. The sowing of all major crops this year is more than that in the last kharif.

The institute calculated the weekly return for each commodity as in (price on w/price on w-1) where w is the weekend day and w-1 is the weekend day of the previous week.
