Middle East:Gazprom plans south stream gas pipeline

Completing a feasibility study for the South Stream gas pipeline is a priority for Russian energy monopoly Gazprom, executives said.

Alexei Miller, chief executive of Gazprom, met with his South Stream counterpart Marcel Kramer in Moscow to discuss issues related to the planned European pipeline network.

The executives discussed promoting the project in the European Union "and elsewhere." Completing a feasibility study and an environmental impact assessment were viewed as top priorities during the discussions, the Russian energy company said.

Gazprom said a provision was made in the pipeline plans to reach a design capacity of the offshore section of the pipeline of 2.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

South Stream would branch into two pipelines -- one to Greece and the other through the Balkans -- after it passes through the Turkish waters of the Black Sea.

Technical and economic studies for the pipeline are expected by 2011 and first gas is expected through the pipeline by 2015.
The project is meant to diversify Russia's gas transit options after regional disputes exposed vulnerabilities in the European energy sector.
