Europe: Denmark imports its first gas supplies after deal with Germany

p>Denmark became a gas importer for the first time on Saturday, October 9, according to Torben Brabo, vice president of gas at Danish network operator Energinet.dk.

Denmark brought in some gas from its neighbor country following a new pressure service agreement with German transmission system operators, Brabo said.

While Denmark is only importing gas for small periods of time at present, this could grow in the future as Danish domestic production of gas declines. Importing from Germany gives Denmark access to a wider range of supplies, such as gas imported into Germany from Russia.

Danish energy company DONG has publicly announced a contract for up to 2 billion cubic meters/year of supplies from Gazprom in the future. Denmark and Sweden use approximately 5 Bcm/year of gas, so the deal suggests that the region could be importing around 40% of its gas in the future.
