ONGC starts shale gas exploration

Write: Haldor [2011-05-20]
India s oil and gas giant, ONGC said it begun exploring for shale gas in West Bengal.

According to the state run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, it started drilling the first shale gas well in West Bengal on Tuesday.

ONGC said it had notified the regulator Directorate General of Hydrocarbons on Tuesday about two hydrocarbon exploration discoveries in India's eastern and western coasts.

Companies from around the globe are increasingly investing in shale gas, underground rock formations that hold reserves of oil and natural gas.

Shale gas accounts for between 15 percent and 20 percent of U.S. gas production but is expected to quadruple in coming years, touching off a scramble among producers large and small for access to resources.
