This will be the second such facility that Excelerate has built with the consortium. The group earlier completed the GasPort operation, located south of Buenos Aires in Bahia Blanca.
The new LNG terminal will be located in Escobar, about 30 miles north of Buenos Aires, said Excelerate, based in The Woodlands, Texas. No financial details were given for the project.
"Due to its favored location, the GasPort facility in Escobar will have a significant impact on the supply to Buenos Aires and the north of Argentina, adding flexibility and fast response to these growing markets," Excelerate said in a statement.
Argentina is seeking to diversify its energy supplies given the country's declining natural gas production and reserves. The country has seen some gas shortages during the recent Southern Hemisphere winter months.
The consortium plans to complete the Escobar facility in May 2011, and it will be fully connected to the country's existing gas transmission facilities.
German utility RWE bought a 50% stake in Excelerate in 2008.
