Indian state-owned engineering firm Bharat Heavy Electricals (Bhel) has won a contract to build a 1,200MW coal-fired power plant in Chhattisgarh state in central India.

Bhel will build the main plant, installing two 600MW units for Dainik Bhaskar (DB), which is part of the Bhaskar conglomerate, under the 26.65bn rupees ($565mn) deal. The plant is expected to be commissioned next year.

DB has also proposed building another 1,200MW coal-fired power plant in the Singrauli district of nearby Madhya Pradesh state. Bhaskar has been allocated by the government a 100mn t coal block in the Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh, which will help supply its power stations.

India is rapidly expanding its electricity capacity, boosting Bhel's orders book. Bhel secured total orders to build 16.5GW of generation capacity in the fiscal year to March 2010. Independent power producers accounted for almost 90pc of these orders. The company secured a Rs57.8bn order in March to build two coal-fired power plants in west India's Maharashtra state.
