Japan and Russia have reached a preliminary agreement to build an LNG production and export facility near the far east Russian port of Vladivostok. The agreement is expected to be confirmed during Russian president Dmitry Medvedev's visit to Japan in November.
Russia's state-owned gas monopoly Gazprom has been examining the feasibility of producing LNG or CNG using natural gas from eastern Siberia in joint studies with Japan's energy agency Jogmec and the Japanese partners in the Sakhalin 1 project, Itochu and Japex.
The LNG project will also coincide with next year's completion of the 6bn m /yr Sakhalin-Vladivostok gas pipeline.
Tokyo has high hopes for Russia's far east to become a key energy supplier to Japan because of its close proximity. Japan in April started taking LNG from Russia's first LNG export project, Gazprom's 9.6mn t/yr Sakhalin 2 venture.
