Adani to develop Australian coal export terminal

Indian conglomerate Adani Group is one of two firms picked to develop Australian coal export terminals at the Queensland port of Hay's Dudgeon Point.

Adani will pair with domestic terminal operator DBCT Management, which already leases the nearby Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT), according to state-owned port operator North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP).

Adani is India's largest coal trader by volume, selling on to the country's utilities, but it is also building its own power generation in India. Adani increased its thermal coal imports by 66pc to 20.06mn t for the financial year ended 31 March. India predominantly buys its thermal coal from Indonesia and South Africa, but is increasingly buying more coking coal from Australian suppliers.

Dudgeon Point is located about 15km south of Mackay on the Queensland coast and is about 4km north of the existing 85mn t/yr DBCT and the 44mn t/yr Hay Point coal terminal. NQBP expects Dudgeon Point's proximity to Hay to support the increasing demand for Australian coal.

If Adani and DBCT decide to proceed with the project after the planning process, they will be required to fund their own construction and operations while the Queensland state government retains ownership of the land, NQBP chief executive Brad Fish said. NQBP has yet to comment on cost estimates for the project or the time frame for the development.

NQBP said it will work with Adani and DBCT to prepare a master plan for Dudgeon Point's development, which will help with the potential allocation of land to build coal export infrastructure. The port operator said studies indicated that coal infrastructure capable of exporting up to 120mn t/yr may fit on the available land.
