India kharif crop sowing picks up

Kharif crop sowing in India has picked up in the major growing regions of the country as compared to last year, said a latest data from the Agriculture Ministry Monday.

As per data received from States as on last Friday, paddy has been sown in 72.3 lakh hectare as compared to 68.67 lakh ha on this date last year, showing an increase of 3.6 lakh ha over the same period.

Coarse cereals have been sown in 58.3 lakh ha, about 5 lakh ha more as compared to last year. After a slow start, pulses sowing is also catching up, though it is still 18 thousand hectares less than this time last season.
