India s sugar output is projected to be higher by 19% to 25.5 million metric tons from 18.7 million tons in the next marketing season, an industry official was quoted by Dow Jones Newswires as said Monday.
According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association, Deputy Director General M.N. Rao, the increase acreage under the sugarcane is expected bring out more yields in the next marketing season.
The projected 25.5 million metric tons is higher that the country s estimated annual demand of 23 million tons.
The likely jump in output would mean that the country may be able to export or at least stop imports from the next year beginning Oct. 1, after two straight years of shortfall.
