South African state-owned power utility Eskom has reached a wage deal with trade unions, averting the risk of strike action at Africa's largest coal user.
Eskom increased its wage offer to unions to 9pc in mediation talks held over the weekend, in addition to improved housing allowances.
Union leaders, including those from the National Union of Mineworkers, will today recommend to their members that they accept Eskom's offer.
Eskom consumes more than 125mn t/y of coal at its power stations, which account for 95pc of the country's electricity supply. The utility warned that strike action could have affected electricity supplies as the country hosts the football World Cup.
