The cost for cleaning up of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that affected thousands of people, has reached to a total of USD 3.12 billion ( 2bn).

According to the information provided by the UK s oil giant, BP Plc, the company has spent more than $3 billion so far in attempts to stop an oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico and to settle damage claims.

The oil company said Monday that is has spent such huge amount to address to the spill carnage, attempting to contain oil, paying claims and reimbursing the US and local government claims.

The cost also includes the $147 million paid out in compensation to some of those affected by the spill.

But the company fears that the total cost of the spill that had begun on April 20 this year, may be much higher than this. Last week, the company had reported the cost at $2.65 billion.
