Contracts are signed for Borouge 3 expansion

July 05-Construction contracts have been signed for the Borouge 3 project which will further boost polyethylene and polypropylene production at the joint-venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co and Borealis.

The three contracts worth $2.6bn were signed during a ceremony last week.

The first contract worth $1.255bn for the construction of two Borstar enhanced polyethylene and two Borstar enhanced polypropylene units was signed with a joint venture consortium of Maire Tecnimont of Italy and Samsung Engineering of South Korea. The capacity of the new polyethylene units is 1.08m tpa and the new polypropylene units is 960,000 tpa.

The second contract worth $400m was signed with the same jv for the construction of a 350,000 tpa low density polyethylene unit. The third contract worth $935m for the utilities and off-site facilities for the expanded plant was signed with Hyundai Engineering and Construction of South Korea.

The project will quadruple Borouge s production capacity to over 4.5 million tpa by 2013, making it the largest integrated polyolefins site in the world, the company says. The Borouge 2 expansion project is being completed this year.
