Following its highly successful DSL installation at last month s Olympic Games in Greece, ZTE Corporation - China s largest supplier of telecommunications equipment - is to extend its network into the capital city Athens as part of a contract with OTE, Greece s major telecommunications operator.

The new network will be installed and will enter service before the end of this year. "OTE were delighted with the quality and reliability of our network, which gave its own gold medal performance in a world spotlight location," said ZTE s European general manager Chen Jiang.
"They have now decided to develop this service into Athens itself and we are looking forward to demonstrating again the capability and support that ZTE offers to its customers around the world."
The Olympic network performed throughout the Games with no problems or downtime. Under the contract, ZTE helped OTE to deploy an ADSL system serving 16 points in Athens. Using the network, all Olympic facilities, including the main venues, international broadcasting centres, news centres and the press village were able to access broadband Internet services throughout the event.
ZTE began research and development in broadband access products in 1997. It was one of the earliest developers of China s ADSL, VDSL, SHDSL, ADSL2+ standards. To date, ZTE has deployed over 10 million ports of DSL products in countries around the world, including China, Greece, Thailand, India, the Philippines and Pakistan. New developments see ZTE focused on constructing a win-win DSL value chain with operators and end-users.
