Shenzhen-based ZTE Corporation announced recently that it has successfully developed OADM (Optical Add\Drop Multiplexing) technology, or the heart of optical networks.ZTE worked in collaboration with Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications to develop the technology for China Access Information Network, a pilot optical network system.

The new technology is also part of national innovative technology plan 863.According to ZTE officials, the new technology passed rigorous performance tests early last month and was successfully deployed in Wuhan, a city in Central China well advanced in optical networking technology. The optical equipment ZTE has developed is known as UnitransTM ZXOADM.

It is capable of transmitting a large volume of data at a fast speed. According to ZTE engineers, the equipment s average transmitting speed id 40 gigabytes per second. In other words, using an optical network system powered by ZTE equipment, one can easily transmit eight movies in one second. Further more, the equipment has also a strong asset management function, capable of leveling data loads, monitoring transmissions and gateways.

Engineers say that with strong data handling capacity, such optical networks can handle multiple services including Internet access, telephony and data management. The technology promises a new era of faster and more reliable telecommunications services, according to ZTE engineers.ZTE plans to launch mass production of the UnitransTM ZXOADM equipment to meet the growing need of optical products.
