Experts discuss 3G technology

The Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2), an international research organization responsible for setting the international standards for third-generation wireless technology, convened yesterday in Shenzhen s Wuzhou Guest House, a sign that the high-tech city is receiving increasing international attention for its development in wireless technology.

The conference, made up of representatives from Qualcomm, Sprint, Lucent Technologies, Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola and other leading technology firms, discussed technical specifications for the third generation wireless services. ZTE Corporation, which was admitted as a member of 3GPP2 in April this year, hosted the conference of the organization.

The conference will mainly focus on developing unified standards for a possible converging of CDMA2000 and UMTS technologies to pave the way for the rollout of third generation wireless services.ZTE Corporation is one of China s leading wireless technology developers. In May of this year, the company developed the first CDMA system comprising of both base stations and switching systems.

It also worked with China Unicom, the country s second largest telecommunications service provider, to install major network systems in 10 provinces in China. Earlier, the company also developed the world s first detachable CDMA handsets and initiated a standard for future technology development.ZTE, with new advancements in CDMA technology, succeeded in deploying voice services in January and combined voice, data and video transmission services in August.

3GPP2, headquartered in the US city of Arlington, Virginia, was created in January 1999 with members from North America and Asia.The conference is scheduled to finish on Friday.
