ZTE develops new handsets for Little Smart service

Shenzhen Zhongxing Telecom (ZTE) (China), handset maker, has developed a new camera-enabled handset for the Xiaolingtong or Little Smart cheap wireless phone service popular in China. Little Smart offers a basic wireless service with limited roaming. The new model was exhibited at the recent China High-Tech Fair in Shenzhen, China.

China had around 25 mil Little Smart users at end-August 2003, up from 12 mil at end-2002, and is expected to have around 50 mil by end-2004. ZTE has developed the new camera model in co-operation with China Netcom and China Telecom and aims to signs its first orders in the next few months. The camera handset is expected to sell for Yuan2k-Yuan3k (USDlr242-USDlr362), around the same price as camera models for true wireless services.

The average price for a Little Smart handset is currently Yuan1k.
