Talent Wins Mayor s Award

January 13,2003 - XIE DAXIONG, vice president of Zhongxing Telecom (ZTE), became Shenzhen s first winner of the Mayor s Award, the top award for science and technology advancement in the city. He won a prize of 500,000 yuan (US$60,000) from Mayor Yu Youjun at the city s science achievements award ceremony Friday.

The award, established this year by the local government, targets talents who have made distinguished contributions to the city s high-tech industrialization and thus yielded huge economic returns. Shenzhen began to award science and technology advancements 17 years ago. Xie revealed himself among other 22 talents applying for the top award by successfully developing CDMA with his team, which filled the blank in China s telecommunication technology field.

Altogether, 96 scientific projects involving 536 scientific personnel received awards at various levels for their achievements and contributions for the year 2002. These prizes varied from 30,000 yuan to 100,000 yuan. The Tellin intellectual network system, a new technology developed by Huawei Technologies which can add more functions and flexible services to telephones, won a national award, along with four other four scientific achievements.

It was the first time the city has won a State-level scientific award since the establishment of the special economic zone.
