SHENZHEN/SHANGHAI, China - ZTE Corporation, the largest and only listed telecom firm in the Hong Kong and Shenzhen stock exchanges, expects sales to grow 150 percent in the Philippines this year from its existing clients outside of the controversial national broadband network project.

Steering clear of the contentious issues surrounding the 0-million NBN contract, ZTE deputy general manager for international marketing Zeng Li said they have a long-term development plan for the Philippines and this includes growing its business with its existing client base.

ZTE senior vice president for international marketing Pang Sheng Qing said the firm mainly supplies telecommunications equipment for 3G, voice over internet protocol (VOIP), CDMA and broadband services such as NGN and WiMAX to Philippine telecommunications companies such as Globe Telecom, Bayan Telecommunications, and Digital Telecommunications.

ZTE, which prides itself of being able to offer end-to-end solutions from telecom infrastructure down to softphone terminals and GSM handsets, expects Philippine sales from these clients to jump to P100 million this year from P40 million in 2006.

According to ZTE senior account manager for the Philippines Wang Feng, ZTE is now the leading supplier for CDMA technology in the Philippines. CDMA allows local telcos to offer wireless fixed line services.

The firm is also looking into the feasibility of putting up another overseas research and development and is considering the Philippines as a potential site.

ZTE vice president and chief information officer Ni Qin said that it will take time to develop this idea since they will have to consider looking for a local partner, the requirements of the Philippine market, as well as the ideal focus for the existing talent pool in the country.

The firm currently has 14 R&D facilities in China the United States, India, Pakistan, and Sweden focusing on various aspects of the telecom business such as optical cross-connect technologies, network management, software, and fixed and wireless technologies.
