Chinese vendor to deploy core, access technology for Emcali in time for commercial launch at end of year.
ZTE announced Tuesday it has won a contract to deploy Colombia's first WiMAX network on behalf of public services company Emcali.
Under the terms of the agreement, the Chinese technology vendor will provide core network equipment, wireless access products, and a number of indoor and outdoor terminals.
The company said that it will also supply Emcali with WiMAX base stations to enable it to roll out mobile wireless coverage in the regions of Cali and Popayan.
"This deal further cements our technology strengths in driving the growth and development of WiMAX in Colombia and Latin American markets," said Su Jian, chief representative of ZTE Colombia, in a statement.
Currently Emcali provides fixed-line telecoms services, as well as utilities including water, sanitation and energy.
"Once the project is completed. Emcali will be able to offer WiMAX mobile services as well as fixed-line phone services, network transmission and IPTV," said ZTE.
The network is expected to be commercially launched before the end of 2008.
"Emcali is one of a growing number of telecom operators worldwide investing in developing advanced WiMAX technology to address users' needs," said the vendor.
According to statistics from Pyramid Research, global WiMAX subscribers are expected to grow to 41 million by 2012 from 2.1 million in 2007, with emerging markets accounting for 57% of that total.
In Latin America various WiMAX projects have been undertaken over the last two years in Peru, Brazil, and Chile, where a lack of fixed-line infrastructure makes wireless technologies a more feasible means of rolling out broadband services.
Mexico's telecoms regulator Cofetel recently reiterated plans to auction off more spectrum in 2008, including frequencies that can be used by WiMAX.
Further afield, there is strong potential for WiMAX in emerging markets across the globe. Recently U.S. vendor Motorola singled out Vietnam as a good example.
ZTE, meanwhile, has established 21 commercial WiMAX trials, with labs in 20 countries across Europe, the U.S., Asia and Africa.
