ZTE Corporation, China's telecommunications equipment and network solutions vendor, , won a contract to supply WCDMA wireless equipments to VIBO Telecom Inc, a subsidiary of the Taiwan Kinpo-Compal Group.

The deal is crucial for China s telecom giant as it offers a chance to tap into the growing 3G data services market in the island state. Under the agreement, ZTE (News - Alert) will supply more than 3,500 3G base-stations over the next one year replacing VIBO s existing 3G network across Taiwan. The base-stations to be supplied to VIBO, one of the leading 3G WCDMA operators, are reportedly based on ZTE s SDR technology.
In Q1 2010, number of 3G subscribers accounted for 60 percent of the total subscribers from Taiwan, increased from about 40 percent in 2008. 3G communication has become the de facto standard for the local market," commented Zhang Jiangsu, GM of GU product at ZTE Corporation, in a press release. ZTE will enable VIBO to roll out 21.6 Mbps HSPA+ mobile broadband services across the entire island of Taiwan, making it easier for its consumers to access internet. Our SDR platform can ensure the smooth and seamless upgrade of the network from GSM/UMTS (News - Alert) to HSPA+ and LTE, allowing VIBO to dramatically reduce its operating and infrastructure costs, Zhang added.
"In the telecommunications industry, it is critical to work with a trusted partner who can handle complex requirements and ensure a smooth delivery. ZTE is the one we have partnered with for a long time and we are always impressed by its capabilities to provide us with innovative, sustainable and cost-effective solutions," said Mr. Feng-Hsiung Chang, CEO of VIBO Telecom. ZTE has already made considerable inroads in the global UMTS markets with the help of its SDR technical platform. ZTE has already shipped over 250,000 units of SDR base stations worldwide and more than 60 operators in over 40 countries making use of it.

Other telecom operators who awarded UMTS contracts to ZTE include Turkey s No.1 mobile operator TurkCell and No.3 mobile operator AVEA, Vietnam s No.1 mobile operator Viettel and No.2 mobile operator Vinaphone, and Indonesia s No.1 telecom operator Telkomsel. At the same time, the company is also collaborating with world-class operators in the UMTS field, including Telenor (News - Alert), TeliaSonera, KPN, and Telstra.
