Asia:Cars in India to come with star ratings

According to a new set of guidelines put forward by India government, cars sold in India should come out with a star rating based on its energy efficiency.

The star ratings are part of the government's move to stipulate strict fuel efficiency norms for cars, especially sports utility vehicles.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), mandated by the prime minister's office to stipulate the norms under the Energy Conservation Act, wants automobile manufacturers to opt for fuel efficiency norms either on the basis of brand or weight.

This would be as same as star ratings on the electronic equipment that highlights how efficient they are in terms of consuming electricity.

Standards and labelling will be done for automobiles like SUVs, cars, other four wheelers but it doesn't include trucks and two-wheelers.

Later the government also has plans to implement the same on two-wheelers and trucks.

Not much happy with the government's move car makers argue that both BEE options could result in an increase in vehicle costs because of technology up gradation.
