Plains are distributed on the southern bank of Huaihe River, the valleys of Cui, Ji Rivers and the lower reaches of Hangbu and Fengle River with an area of 9.9497 mu, accounting for 36.9% of the total area of Lu'an. The plains on the Huaihe River account for 8.485 million mu, with three lake billabongs covering 2.005 million mu and accounting for 23.6% of the total plain area on the Huaihe River. These billabongs are fertile lands, but frequented by water logging. The plains on Hangbu and Fengle Rivers cover an area of 1.465 million mu with an altitude of less than 30 meters above sea level. The plains consist of flooding residues with deep soil and fertile soil.
The total land area of Lu'an is 17.976 square kilometers, equaling to 26.964 million mu. The cultivate land is 6.6996 million mu, accounting for 24.8%; Forestry land is 9.087 million mu, accounting for 33.7%; Meadow land 1.013 million mu, accounting for 3.8%; Garden plot 297 thousand mu, accounting for 1.1%; Waters 1.646 million mu, accounting for 6.1% (of which, 955 thousand mu is capable for aquatics breeding). In 1986, the per capital cultivate land is 1.16 mu, forestry land 1.58 mu, meadow land 0.18 mu, waters 0.29 mu.
The mountainous area accounts for the most part of the total area of Lu'an. The southern mountainous area and hilly land altogether occupy an area of 11.38 million mu. Of which, garden plots and forestry land only accounting 52.9%. There're still vast land of woods, bushes and grass remained to be exploited??The hillocky lands and plains between Changjian and Huaihe Rivers and mostly cultivate land, accounting for 80% of the total cultivate land. Based on different influences on the soil formation from terrain, constitutes, climate, vegetation and cultivation, the soils of Lu'an are classified as 8 categories, 15 sub-categories, 60 generic types and 237 soil varieties. Belt soils are yellow or brow color. The vertical belt soils in the middle mountainous land are dark brown color. Non-belt soils consist of wet soil, paddy field soil, brown sand soil, purple soil and lime soil, of which the paddy field soil and brown soil account for 82.9%.
