The water resources of Lu'an come mainly from rainfall to the ground surface streams and rivers. The underground water resources are scarce. The average rainfall for years is between 800 and 1,600 mm. The average year is ground surface water is 9.21 billion cubic meters. The area distributions are: Dabie Mountainous Area accounts for 60%, Hillocky Land between Changjiang River 33.8%, Billabongs on Huaihe River 4.7%, Paddy fields on Hangbu and Fenghe Rivers 1.5%. Time distributions are: The difference ratio between rain abundant year and rain scare year is 2.5. In the yearly distributions the flood seasons accounts for 50-60%.
The area has two river systems - Huaihe River and Changjiang River systems. Major rivers are Peihe, Shihe, Panhe, Jihe and East Feihe Rivers, all originating from Dabie Mountain and running from south to north and empty to Huaihe River. The Hanbu, Fengle Rivers runs from west to north and empty to Changjiang River via the Chaohu Lake. In 1984, the present water conservancy projects have a total storage volume of 8.062 billion cubic meters, of which the storage volume of reservoirs is 7.057 billion cubic meters, ponds 0.989 billion cubic meters. The average year has more than enough water.
Lu'an is rich in hydropower resources with total storage capacity of 516,000 kilowatts. 330,000 cubic meters water is exploitable. By the end of 1986, 148,200 kilowatts have been exploited, accounting for 44.9% of its exploitable volume.
Plant Resources
Lu'an has arboreal and shrubs of 28 orders, 73 families, 224 genera , 820 species??and wild grasses of 19 families, 150 species; cultivated or wild herbal plants of 949 species; cultivated crops of 35 species and 1,936 subspecies, of which there??re 370 kinds of paddies, 144 kinds of barleys and wheat, 10 kinds of cotton, 375 kinds of vegetables and 264 kinds of melons and fruits.
Animal Resources
Lu'an is located in the transit zone of Palaearctic to Oriental animal regions. According to preliminary survey, Lu'an has 500 amphibian animals. Lu'an has many poultry and livestock species, including cattle, sheep, goat, pig, chicken, duck, goose, rabbit, honey bees, donkey, horse, and mule, etc. The cattle, buffalo, white goat, pig, white goose, duck and chicken are of fine quality species in local.
Aquatic products include fish, shrimp, turtle, clam and snail. There are fishes of 11 orders, 19 families and 92 species. High quality fish are Huawang fish from Huaihe River, whitebait from Wapu Lake, shrimp from Peihe River.
Wild animal resources are distributed in two areas. One is the Hilly Land between Changjiang and Huaihe River. This area has 23 species of beasts, 190 species of birds, 14 species of reptiles, 8 species of amphibians, altogether 238 animal species. The other is the Dabie Mountain area, which has 39 species of beasts, 120 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles, 15 species of amphibians, altogether 39 animal species.
Mineral resources
Lu'an has 24 proven prospected mineral resources in 55 places. There are 1 reserve of solid fuel - coal; 17 reserves of iron and chrome; 4 reserves of gold, silver, lead, zinc; 9 reserves of metallurgical additives such as magnesite, silica, etc.; 8 reserves of phosphorus, kalium stone, peridotite, alunite, etc.; 2 reserves of crystal; 15 reserves of asbestos, graphite, porcelain clay, quartz, constructions stones and sticky clay, etc; 2 hot springs.
