New HIV/AIDS report released in Zhejiang

The Health Bureau of Zhejiang Province released a report on this year s status of HIV/AIDS epidemic on December 1, the World AIDS Day..

The report shows that by the end of October 2010, Zhejiang has reported 6, 618 cases of HIV carriers and AIDS patients, including 2, 021 cases of AIDS patients, and 697 cases of death.

The number of HIV/AIDS carriers infected through male-to-male sex has been constantly rising , said Zheng Wei, Director of the Disease Control Department of Zhejiang Health Bureau. 2, 062 people have been newly diagnosed to be HIV carriers and AIDS patients this year, an increase of 39.6% over the same period of last year, with male-to-male sex accounting for 27.3% of all newly-diagnosed HIV/AIDS cases.


According to the report, the epidemic
in Zhejiang is still on the rise, affecting a large population. While the number of the aged with HIV/AIDS is climbing rapidly, youngsters are still the most vulnerable group to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. And sex remains the most prevalent route of transmission of HIV/AIDS.
