A total of 585,000 volunteers including city volunteers and volunteers in venues serving the Guangzhou Asian Games, most of whom were college canvassed this year's Asian Games, according to Wang Huanqing, Director of the Volunteers Department of the Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (GAGOC).
Yoon Seong from Korea said she was happy as a city volunteer. "I can teach others Korean and they will help me improving my Chinese," said Yoon.
Most city volunteers worked four and a half hours each day but some spent much longer time at the venues because they had to arrive at the venue three hours before the start of the competition, and leave three hours after each competition ended.
"Although the work time is long, I'm not tired because I enjoy the job," said Xiao He,a student from South China University of Technology.
Some volunteers have vowed to incorporate their new found spirit into daily life. "Take off this Volunteers' Uniform of Asian Games, I'm still a volunteers in ordinary life", said Lin Xiaoyuan, who joined the Asian volunteers this May.
"It is a very precious experience for me. I was very shy, but now, I'm used to offer help to strangers," said another volunteer suenamed Qi.
