Macao launches mobile phone weather warnings for elderly

Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) of Macao has formally launched extreme weather warnings for the elderly through Short Message Service (SMS), the Macao Post Daily reported on Wednesday (Jan 19).

The newspaper quoted SMG director Fong Soi Kun as saying that the extreme weather warnings will be sent to the mobile phones of those in charge of senior resident services at least 48 hours before the weather changes are forecast to take place.

According to Fong, the bureau will send out the text messages whenever temperature drops to 14 degree Celsius or below, as well as when the weather is cloudy, rainy, very windy or experiencing high levels of relative humidity.

The main contents of the messages include indications how long the temperature drop is expected to remain, and the lowest expected temperature during the weather change.

Similarly, text messages will be sent out when the temperature is predicted to hit 33 degree Celsius or higher, or 32 degree Celsius with "less" wind forecast to occur.

Fong said that his bureau had received a positive response from Macao's senior resident services during last year's trial period.
